Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will supply a total of 10 terminal tractors to Sintermar Darsena Toscana (SDT), a joint venture between the Grimaldi Group and Terminal Darsena Toscana (TDT), the main container terminal of the Port of Livorno and one of the most important container terminals in Europe. The order, which also includes a Kalmar Complete Care service contract, was booked in Cargotec’s 2019 Q3 order intake and delivery is scheduled for Q4 of 2019.

West Africa Container Terminal (WACT), located in Onne Port, has invested in two new Liebherr LHM 550 Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHCs) in response to continued volume growth in the Eastern Nigerian market. The new harbor cranes are due for deployment in July this year and will further boost the efficiency and cargo handling operation of the terminal, improving service delivery and reducing vessel waiting time.
This is in addition to an investment of approximately USD2.5 million in 10 purpose-built terminal trucks, three reach stackers and an empty container handler, as well as terminal infrastructure and manpower development.
“This latest investment in mobile harbour cranes will help us achieve our objectives and reach our goals. Growth in volume over the last two years have highlighted various infrastructure challenges and we are working with key stakeholders to address them. This is expected to bring a lot more opportunities to us and our customers and grow our businesses,” said Aamir Mirza, Managing Director.
An overall terminal infrastructure upgrade project is expected to commence in 2020. WACT is proactively engaging the Nigeria Port Authority, Oil & Gas Free Zone and other government entities to ensure Onne Port is ready for the future growth opportunities.
Kalmar has extended its collaboration with the global terminal operator DP World by placing a new order for 33 terminal tractors, three empty container handlers, three reach stackers and one forklift. The new fleet of Kalmar mobile equipment will serve DP World’s port at Posorja, the first deep-water port in Ecuador that is currently in its first phase of development. Once complete the terminal will feature a 480-metre berth and have an annual capacity of 750,000 TEU.
The new Kalmar mobile equipment will also be connected to the Kalmar Insight performance management and optimisation tool, which will provide personnel at DP World Posorja with a real-time view of the terminal’s productivity and performance.
The order delivery is scheduled to begin during the second quarter of 2019.
Logistics solutions provider P&O Ferrymasters has recently launched the new intermodal services from the Turkish ports of Pendik, Ambarli and Mersin to the Free Port of Trieste in Italy. The new services will have departures six times a week in both directions and will be connected with rail links from the port of Trieste to P&O Ferries’ continental hubs at Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
P&O Ferrymasters’ customers will be supported by one of the company’s local customs experts in Turkey to help facilitate the import and export of goods to and from the country. It will be possible to transport hazardous cargoes with a load of up to 25 tons.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will supply a complete AutoRTG system to Belfast Container Terminal (BCT) in Northern Ireland following and order booked in the fourth quater of 2018. The system will include eight automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes (AutoRTGs) controlled by the Kalmar Terminal Logistic System (TLS) and new-generation remote control (RC) desks.
The cranes at BCT will operate fully automated within the container stack, receiving orders from the Kalmar TLS which performs planning, routing and execution for all operations based on orders from the terminal operating system (TOS). Crane gantry operation will be automated with supervision from the operator at the RC desk in the control room. Truck handling will be remote controlled, and the system will feature a truck positioning system to ensure accurate alignment of trucks under the RTGs. Kalmar will be responsible for the integrations between the TLS, the TOS and other relevant systems.
The delivery of the system is scheduled to begin at the end of 2019.
Turkey’s newest port operator, Atakaş Liman İşletmeciliği Ve Tic. A.Ş. (Atakas Port Business), has recently ordered a Model 7 portal harbor crane, making it the third Konecranes Gottwald crane purchased within the past year. The Model 7 portal harbour crane is a four-rope G HSK 7528 B crane with lifting capacities of up to 125 t, a 50-t grab curve for mechanical grab operation and has an outreach of up to 54 m. The crane’s portal has a clearance of 6 m with the track gauge measuring 14 m. To compensate for the different rail loadings due to the crane offset in relation to its portal, the bogies on the quay side are fitted with eight wheels each and on the land side with six. The Model 7 portal harbor crane was ordered in the third quarter of 2018 and will be put into operation from mid-2019. The crane will work in Iskenderun on Turkey’s southeastern coast, mainly handling bulk and later serving large container vessels.

To meet our goals, we have chosen reliable and high-performance Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour crane technology once again. We started our operations with two flexible rubber-tired cranes to handle various types of cargo, but now we need rail-mounted cranes for continuous-duty bulk handling,” said Vedat Ohri, General Manager of Atakas Port.
DP World has created a joint venture with the industrial engineering specialists SMS group with the aim to improve containers handling in ports. Originally developed by AMOVA, a subsidiary of the SMS group, this new high bay storage system continuously processes metal coils weighing up to 50 t in racks as high as 50 m. Instead of stacking containers directly on top of each other, which has been global standard practice for decades, the system places each container in an individual rack comportent. The containers are stored in an eleven-story rack, doubling its capacity compared to a conventional container terminal. This new system will be used for the first time at Jebel Ali Terminal 4, just in time for the Dubai Expo 2020 world fair.
Euroports Germany has recently taken a delivery of the first out of two Liebherr LHM 550 in order to increase the turnover at the multipurpose terminal in the Port of Rostock, Germany. Both cranes come in a two-rope configuration with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 144 tonnes and a maximum outreach of 54 metres. The difficult conditions at the Euroports pier were a challenge in the configuration process. Liebherr has found a custom-made solution with specially adapted double supporting pads in order to comply with the prescribed ground pressures.
Ordered in 2018, one of the two cranes was shipped fully assembled in mid-December from the Liebherr plant to the 500 metres distant pier of Euroports. The machines will be used for different applications like project cargo, bulk and containers.
The Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (Hyperloop TT / HTT) and the Port of Hamburg operating company, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (HHLA), have set up a joint venture. This new structure will focus on integrating the latest innovations in container transport with Hyperloop technology for the port of Hamburg, one of the largest ports in Europe. The goal for the joint venture is to develop and commercialize a new Hyperloop transport system for operations in seaports as well as for domestic transport. A first study will be launched on the connection of a freight system by Hyperloop to connect the HHLA container terminal to the inland container parks. This will strengthen the port’s capacity by reducing congestion in the port area and the city and lowering the port’s carbon footprint. The construction of a transhipment station for testing at the HHLA terminal in Hamburg, including a first 100 meter freight line as well as a special cargo capsule and loading dock, should follow very fast.
Few days ago, during a groundbreaking ceremony organized in Somaliland, the first phase of the building of the Berbera port’s expansion has begun. It has been officially launched by the President of the Republic of Somaliland Muse Bihi Adi and the DP World Group CEO, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. This step will gather a 400m quay, 250 000 square meters of expansion and a free zone dedicated to create a new regional trading hub. To carry out this construction, DP World Berbera chose its partner Shafa Al Nadha Contracting, which have been involved in the Port of Dakar expansion in Senegal as well as the Port of Maputo expansion in Mozambique.
