COLI Group has completed the transport of 14 power transformers for GE Vernova from Türkiye to Poland in support of the 1.5 GW Baltica 2 offshore wind project.
The six-month operation involved three separate sea voyages using chartered vessels, followed by port handling, barging, RoRo operations and heavy road transport.
Ten transformers weighing between 110 and 170 tonnes were discharged at the Port of Gdynia before being transported by road to the project site.
The remaining four units, each weighing 361 tonnes, were barged to Władysławowo, where COLI carried out a complex RoRo operation using a pontoon. Temporary storage was also established while the final site was prepared.
The land transport programme included five heavy convoys using a range of SPMT and THP configurations. For the heaviest movements, two parallel 14-axle-line SPMT combinations were deployed alongside a truck equipped with 16 x 1.5 THP axle lines, supported by eight pilot vehicles.
Other convoy configurations included trucks operating with 12, 15 and 18 THP axle lines.
Two bridges along the route were unable to accommodate the required loads, forcing temporary flyover bridge structures to be installed above the existing infrastructure.
The transports were also carried out in difficult winter conditions, with temperatures falling as low as -15°C.
Felix Peinemann, Managing Director of COLI Group, said the project demonstrated the value of combining expertise across the company’s different locations.
Baltica 2 is being developed by PGE Group and Ørsted in the Polish Baltic Sea and is expected to feature 107 wind turbines. Commissioning is currently scheduled for 2027.
