H4 Marseille Fos Secures Power for e-SAF Plant

EDF and H4 Marseille Fos signed a long-term electricity supply agreement, securing the majority of the power needed for one of Europe’s largest sustainable aviation fuel projects.

The partnership will supply the future e-SAF production facility at Fos-sur-Mer, France, with a combination of renewable energy and low-carbon electricity from the French grid. It also includes the first ten-year nuclear power allocation agreement (CAPN) signed by EDF with a hydrogen and synthetic fuel producer, supporting commercial operations from 2032.

Developed by Hy2gen France and H2V developers, the €1.6 billion project is expected to produce 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually using methanol-to-jet technology. Once operational, the plant could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84 percent compared with conventional jet fuel, avoiding around 240,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year.

Securing long-term electricity supply is a significant milestone as the project advances towards its final investment decision, currently targeted for 2028. The facility is also expected to create 165 direct jobs while supporting the EU’s ReFuelEU Aviation targets and France’s national hydrogen strategy.

Electricity will be sourced through a combination of renewable energy power purchase agreements and around 150 MW of nuclear-generated electricity supplied by EDF over a ten-year period. This approach is designed to provide competitive, predictable energy costs while meeting the regulatory requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification.

Alexis Martinez, Managing Director of H2V and Project Director of H4 Marseille Fos, said the agreement provides the long-term planning certainty required for the project’s next phase, while Hy2gen CEO Cyril Dufau-Sansot described the partnership as a key milestone for the development of the Euro-Mediterranean e-SAF facility.
