A.P. Moller – Maersk has selected Anemoi Marine Technologies to supply a Rotor Sail system for installation on one of its 8,700 TEU Maersk Lima-class container vessels.
The project will mark the first installation of Anemoi’s Rotor Sail technology on a container ship, extending the company’s wind-assisted propulsion systems beyond vessel segments such as bulk carriers.
Under the agreement, Anemoi will design, manufacture and deliver a fixed Rotor Sail measuring 5 m in diameter and 35 m in height. The system will be integrated with the vessel’s existing onboard systems, with Anemoi supporting the engineering and installation process.
Installation is scheduled for mid-2027, after which the technology will be piloted during the vessel’s normal commercial operation. The ship is expected to operate primarily on routes across the North and South Atlantic.
Rotor Sails use aerodynamic lift generated by rotating cylindrical structures to provide additional propulsion. Under suitable wind conditions, the technology can reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, said the pilot would provide practical experience with the technology and help assess its potential across the company’s fleet.
“Wind-assisted propulsion is one of several promising maritime solutions with the potential to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions,” he said.
Founded in 2015, Anemoi has already installed Rotor Sails on vessels operating across a number of international trade routes, with the company continuing to expand the technology into new vessel segments.
