Kässbohrer has delivered 75 Ferry Reefer semi-trailers to Smyril Line, strengthening a long-standing partnership focused on demanding Ro-Ro operations in the North Atlantic.
The handover took place in Goch, Germany, marking a significant expansion of Smyril Line’s Kässbohrer fleet, which now exceeds 200 units. The latest delivery brings the operator’s reefer fleet to 80 units, following five years of operational experience with earlier models.
Operating routes between the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Denmark and the Netherlands, Smyril Line requires equipment capable of handling harsh maritime conditions. The Ferry Reefers are designed with reinforced chassis structures to withstand strong waves and heavy-duty ferry operations.

“After more than five years of experience, we have seen the vehicles’ robustness, reliability and performance firsthand,” said Frodi B. Poulsen, Equipment Manager at Smyril Line. “These trailers meet the demands of our routes and ensure secure operations on Ro-Ro vessels.”
The trailers have also been customised for seafood transport, featuring integrated fishwater tanks and drainage systems to maintain hygiene standards and comply with local regulations.
Kässbohrer highlighted its engineering approach in developing the units. “Our teams worked closely with Smyril Line to meet their precise operational requirements under harsh maritime conditions,” said Mehmet Önen, Head of Key Account Management.
With high insulation performance and reinforced flooring for intensive handling, the new units support reliable cold-chain logistics across one of Europe’s most challenging shipping corridors, further reinforcing the partnership between the two companies.
