Hyundai E&C will carry out front-end engineering design work for two planned large-scale nuclear reactors in the Netherlands under a new agreement with Westinghouse.

The Korean contractor signed the Phase 1 FEED contract on 7 October, joining Westinghouse in early-stage engineering and project assessment for two AP1000 reactors, each rated at approximately 1,100 MWe.

The work will include technical assessments of candidate sites, development of a master plan and preparation of the project execution strategy. Hyundai E&C and Westinghouse will also review Dutch regulations, licensing requirements, technical standards and project schedules.

Risk mitigation and localisation strategies will form part of the FEED programme as the partners prepare the project for potential subsequent design and construction phases.

The Netherlands is currently evaluating potential locations for the new nuclear plants, while Westinghouse remains one of the shortlisted reactor technology candidates.

Hyundai E&C said the engineering phase will be used to adapt the AP1000 design to local site conditions and establish the construction approach required for delivery in the Dutch market.

The company and Westinghouse have already begun developing a local supply chain, including a Netherlands Supplier Symposium held in June with government, industry and nuclear-sector representatives.

A Hyundai E&C official said participation in the FEED phase is intended to position the company for later stages of the project while supporting development of the Netherlands’ new nuclear capacity.

The contract adds to Hyundai E&C’s growing European nuclear portfolio, which also includes work linked to projects in Bulgaria, Slovenia and Finland.
