Steerprop has secured an order to supply azimuth propulsion units for a new hybrid tug under construction at GONDAN Shipbuilders for Norwegian owner Østensjø Rederi.

The vessel, a new tug design developed by naval architect Skipsteknisk, will feature dual end versions of Steerprop’s SP 50 W D propulsors, the most powerful ducted units delivered by the company to date. The hybrid capable configuration allows the tug to operate on diesel power, electric propulsion or a combination of both.

Designed for demanding offshore operations, the tug will deliver around 150 tonnes of bollard pull and include DP2 dynamic positioning capability. The propulsion arrangement is intended to support efficient operations across a wide range of offshore towage and support roles.

The project marks Steerprop’s first collaboration with GONDAN Shipbuilders and renews its relationship with Østensjø Rederi, following close cooperation during the development of the new multipurpose tug concept.

According to the companies, the compact propulsor design offers flexibility in vessel layout, an advantage for hybrid configurations where machinery integration is more complex. The system combines a mechanical propeller drive with a fixed pitch propeller to ensure reliability and continuous availability in harsh offshore environments.

Steerprop’s dual end propulsors enable two power sources to be connected simultaneously. For the new tug, electric propulsion is expected to cover most operating profiles, with diesel power providing additional thrust when higher bollard pull is required.

The partners say the propulsion package is designed to deliver strong lifecycle efficiency while maintaining the manoeuvrability and low speed thrust essential for modern offshore tug operations.
