Concord Cranes’ 450-tonne Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 is working across ports, bridges and infrastructure projects following its February delivery as the first of its type in Africa.
Concord Cranes is deploying Africa’s first Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 across a range of lifting applications in southern Africa, with the six-axle all-terrain crane replacing an older LTM 1400-7.1 in its fleet.
In an operational update released on 27 October, Liebherr said the machine had already undertaken extensive port operations, bridge work and infrastructure projects since its delivery in February 2026.
The crane combines a maximum lifting capacity of 450 tonnes with a 70-metre telescopic boom. Depending on its configuration, it can reach lifting heights of 120 metres. Its equipment includes 140 tonnes of ballast, a Y-guying system, VarioBallast and VarioBase, allowing the set-up to be adapted to individual lifts and site conditions.
Liebherr-Africa said the specification was developed around Concord’s intended applications, balancing lifting performance with transport and mobilisation requirements. The ability to move between projects without the mobilisation demands of larger crawler or lattice-boom cranes was a key operational consideration.
“The biggest advantage is the combination of capacity, reach and mobility,” said Hendrik Burger, Sales Manager Mobile Cranes at Liebherr-Africa.
Local support will include operator and technical training, commissioning assistance, diagnostics, planned maintenance and spare parts. Liebherr-Africa expects continued specialist demand for high-capacity mobile cranes across infrastructure, energy, ports, industrial construction and major maintenance projects in the region.
