Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd. (RSS) has supplied the below-the-hook equipment used to remove a 117.5-tonne bridge at Matlock Sewage Treatment Works as part of Severn Trent’s ongoing site upgrade.
Beaver Bridges was tasked with removing the former access bridge after a new crossing was installed over the River Derwent earlier this year.
The 34-metre-long, 4.5-metre-wide structure was lifted in a single piece using two cranes supplied by Ainscough Crane Hire: a 600-tonne Terex-Demag TC 2800 and a 230-tonne Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 all-terrain crane.
The TC 2800 carried out the primary lift, with the Liebherr operating as the secondary crane.
RSS supplied a 17-metre, 150-tonne capacity Modulift spreader beam for the TC 2800, combined with two CMOD70 spreader frames measuring 10 x 3 metres and providing four lifting points each.
Collar chains were basketed through the bridge and connected via shackles to 6-metre-long, 30-tonne capacity slings.
“With a 117t-plus bridge being removed in a single piece, it was a rewarding project to see through to completion,” said Stephen Littler, Regional Manager at RSS.
Beaver Bridges retained responsibility for lift planning and supervision under CPA crane-hire terms, while Ainscough supplied the cranes and operators and RSS provided the rigging equipment.
Following the successful lift, the old bridge was removed from site for scrapping.
