Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd. (RSS) has supplied a range of below-the-hook equipment to Sarens UK for the lifting of bridge sections using a 250-tonne Grove GMK5250XL-1 all-terrain crane.
The lifting arrangement combined Modulift spreader beams, CMOD spreader frames, slings and chain hoists, with the rigging adapted to suit several different bridge section configurations.
The complete package included a 9.5-metre MOD50 spreader beam, two MOD110 beams at 14.5 metres and 13 metres, together with CMOD50 and CMOD34 frames configured at 1 x 1 metre.
The bridge sections incorporated concrete anchor points, allowing chain hoists to be connected from each corner of the spreader frames positioned at either end of the beams.
RSS coordinated the equipment supply through several of its UK depots, including Grangemouth, Glasgow, Rotherham, Warrington, Heathrow and Aylesford.
“Projects like this demonstrate the importance of having the right below-the-hook equipment for the lifting operation,” said Chris Winton, Depot Manager at RSS. “With several different configurations involved, it was important that the equipment supplied matched the requirements of each lift.”
Spreader frames are particularly suited to loads requiring more than two lifting points and can also provide advantages where available headroom is restricted.
Sarens carried out the lifts using its five-axle Grove GMK5250XL-1, which offers a maximum lifting capacity of 250 tonnes at a 3-metre radius.
The RSS equipment is scheduled to return to the project under a repeat hire arrangement later this month, supporting further lifting work.
