A Grove GMK6450-1 completed the dismantling of a Potain MD 120 tower crane in Berlin after MOBI-HUB removed the all-terrain crane’s main boom for transport to comply with a strict 8-tonne axle-load restriction.
The 450-tonne six-axle crane was deployed for Wilhelm Banzhaf Krananlagen on a confined site in the Neukölln district, where the combination of limited space, long lifting radii and transport restrictions created a complex mobilisation challenge.
To reach the jobsite, the GMK6450-1 had to cross tracks belonging to Berlin’s metro rail system. MOBI-HUB therefore removed the crane’s 60-metre main boom and transported it separately on a lightweight semi-trailer, allowing both vehicles to remain within the 8-tonne-per-axle limit.
Once on site, two smaller mobile cranes assisted with reinstalling the boom. The Grove was then configured with a 73-metre luffing jib, 115 tonnes of counterweight and an 8.7 x 8.5-metre outrigger base.
The crane dismantled components weighing up to nine tonnes at working radii reaching 72 metres and a hook height of approximately 59 metres. The sequence included removal of the tower crane’s ballast, counter-jib structure and main jib sections before the mast was dismantled section by section.
“We needed a machine that could handle heavy lifts at long working radii of over 70 m while operating in a highly constrained workspace,” said Aicke Grell, Crane Operator at MOBI-HUB.
The GMK6450-1 is Grove’s strongest six-axle all-terrain crane and is designed to combine high lifting capacity with transport flexibility for restricted urban and infrastructure projects.
“Its versatility enables us to tackle challenging jobs while delivering the reliability our customers expect,” said Georg Hallau, Owner of MOBI-HUB.
