Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has acquired a stake in Hamburg based offshore specialist Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt as part of a strategic partnership with investment group Schoeller Holdings to strengthen their position in the growing offshore energy sector.

The agreement also includes MOL acquiring shares in several Construction Commissioning Service Operation Vessels currently under construction. The vessels will be marketed globally for offshore energy projects, while Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt will act as the operator.

Through the partnership, the companies aim to combine their expertise and create a strong platform to serve the expanding offshore energy market. MOL brings global experience, operational capacity and a broad network of strategic partnerships in offshore energy, while Deutsche Offshore contributes its specialised know how in offshore vessel development and operations. The collaboration will also focus on launching additional independent projects based on this new platform.

Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt was founded two years ago and has positioned itself as a specialist in advanced offshore support vessels. Its innovative C CSOV concept expands the capabilities of conventional Commissioning Service Operation Vessels by providing greater operational flexibility. The vessels are designed to support the construction, commissioning and maintenance of offshore energy infrastructure.

Four C CSOV vessels have already been ordered by Schoeller Holdings. Technical management will be provided by Columbia Shipmanagement, another company within the Schoeller group, which also owns heavy lift shipping operator AAL Shipping.

Demand for specialised offshore support vessels continues to grow as offshore wind and energy infrastructure projects accelerate worldwide. Europe remains a leading market, driven by large scale offshore wind developments, while Asia Pacific is also emerging as an important growth region. In addition to new construction projects, offshore operators are increasingly seeking advanced vessels capable of supporting commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning activities.
