Shipping giant MSC and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) have signed a five-year partnership agreement with the aim of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry. The GCMD, located in Singapore, will use its expertise to help shape future standards for fuels, finance low-carbon projects and pilot low-carbon solutions in real-world operations conditions.

MSC

MSC, which has 730 vessels and one of the industry’s largest order book of energy-efficient container ships, has been working on energy efficiency for many years and is an early adopter of responsibly-sourced blended biofuels. As part of the partnership, MSC will provide cash contributions towards GCMD’s pooled resources for pilots and trials, as well as make in-kind contributions through participation in projects, including access to vessels and operating data. The goal is to achieve net decarbonisation by 2050, and the partnership aims to drive decarbonisation solutions across the industry.
