Cometto SPMTs have played a central role in the transport and installation of a 750 tonne bridge in Leipzig Sellerhausen, Germany.
Heavy transport specialist Mammoet used four 10 axle Cometto SPMT combinations, coupled side by side, to move the fully assembled bridge approximately 400 metres from the construction area to its final position.
The operation was carried out on behalf of Deutsche Bahn and contractor Hentschke Bau as part of a bridge replacement project that will restore two railway tracks, mainly used for freight traffic.
Lifting systems were installed above the SPMTs to support the bridge during transport. The convoy travelled slowly across steel plates along the prepared route, reaching the installation point after around two hours.

The move took place during a scheduled railway closure affecting services towards Dresden and Chemnitz, making precise execution and reliable transport equipment essential.
Cometto’s electronic steering system enabled individual axle lines to be controlled with millimetre precision throughout the operation.
“The electronic steering system provides millimetre precise control during handling. Each axle can be steered individually,” said Steffen Petzold from Cometto Product Management.
The SPMTs also provide 700 mm of hydraulic stroke, allowing the bridge to be lifted and lowered in combination with the installed jack up systems.
The Leipzig project adds to a growing number of bridge installation applications for Cometto SPMT technology, where high load capacity, manoeuvrability and precise positioning are increasingly important.
Following installation, Deutsche Bahn will complete the tracks, overhead line system and signalling equipment ahead of the bridge’s planned opening on 3 October.
