A proposed marine repair facility in Newfoundland and Labrador would combine Tugdock’s modular submersible platform with existing port infrastructure, with partners preparing to seek an operator.

Mammoet Canada Eastern, Port of Argentia and Argentia Capital signed a memorandum of understanding to advance plans for a floating dry dock and marine repair facility at the Canadian port.

The initiative would bring together Mammoet’s heavy lifting, transport and marine engineering capabilities with technology from its subsidiary Tugdock Submersible Platforms. At its centre is the Tugdock Submersible Platform, a modular floating dry dock system that can be scaled for different vessels and industrial applications.

The proposed operation would draw on Argentia’s graving dock infrastructure, deep-water, ice-free harbour and industrial land. Its separation from residential areas and access to a regional workforce experienced in marine and heavy construction work are also identified as advantages.

Potential customers include commercial vessel operators, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy, offshore oil and gas operators and the developing offshore wind market. The partners envisage a facility serving multiple clients rather than a single project.

Mammoet already operates at Argentia, including at the Cenovus Graving Dock site, and participates in the port’s offshore wind marshalling activities.

Under the agreement, the partners will develop their plans and intend to launch a formal expression-of-interest process in the coming months to identify a marine industrial operator. The memorandum supports project development; it does not confirm that construction or operation of the facility has been committed.
