Bennetts Cranes has erected the UK’s first Liebherr 620 HC-L tower crane for the construction of a new 168 room Marriott hotel in York city centre, marking the first installation of Liebherr’s latest generation luffing jib crane in the country.
The crane, secured following an agreement signed at Bauma 2025, has been installed on the site of the former Banana Warehouse within York’s historic city walls. Designed for space constrained projects, the 620 HC-L combines high lifting performance with a compact footprint, making it well suited to challenging urban developments.
The project presented significant logistical constraints, with the crane positioned just four metres from the building under construction while neighbouring properties could not be oversailed. The crane also needed to lift precast concrete panels weighing up to 14 tonnes, requiring both high lifting capacity and precise operation.
To meet these requirements, Bennetts configured the crane with a 45 metre jib, providing the required lifting performance while maintaining a compact working and out of service radius.
Tracey Pockett, Director at Bennetts Cranes, said, “Our investment in the Liebherr 620 HC-L reflects our commitment to expanding Bennetts’ high-capacity tower crane fleet with equipment that meets the demands of modern construction sites. The 620 HC-L gives customers the lifting power needed for complex projects, while helping them work safely and efficiently on sites where space is limited and oversailing must be carefully managed.”
The crane also features Liebherr’s intelligent control systems, level luffing technology and Micromove function for precise load positioning. A pin tower system and pre installed rope reeving further simplify assembly, reducing installation time while improving operational efficiency on site.
