Jumbo has signed a contract with Dajin Heavy Industry for the construction of two new heavy lift transportation vessels, marking the launch of the company’s new L-Class fleet designed to meet growing demand for versatile heavy lift operations.

The 25,000 DWT vessels have been developed in-house by Jumbo and are designed to be energy efficient and methanol ready, reflecting the company’s continued focus on fleet innovation and cleaner shipping solutions. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028, followed by the second in 2029.

Each L-Class vessel will be equipped with two Huisman 1,200-tonne heavy lift cranes, providing a combined lifting capacity of 2,400 tonnes per vessel. Designed for flexibility and efficiency, the ships will feature high deck strength, a large open deck area, substantial cargo intake capacity, deep cargo holds and advanced lifting performance.

According to Jumbo, the new vessels are intended to address changing market requirements where higher lifting capacities and increased cargo intake are becoming increasingly important. Built in accordance with DNV classification standards and modern clean-energy shipping requirements, the vessels will support operations across offshore wind, oil and gas, mining and other specialised heavy lift sectors.

The L-Class vessels will join the JSI Alliance fleet alongside Jumbo’s existing heavy lift ships. Jumbo’s shipping activities are carried out through the JSI Alliance, the commercial partnership established with SAL in 2021. The alliance expanded further in 2024 with the addition of SAL Intermarine, creating a combined fleet of more than 80 vessels serving global project cargo, energy, industrial and infrastructure markets.

Peter de Bree, CEO of Jumbo, described the project as an important milestone for the company, saying the newbuild programme would create valuable opportunities for clients and partners worldwide. He also thanked the teams across the company for their work in bringing the project to fruition and expressed enthusiasm for continuing cooperation with Dajin Heavy Industry.

Dajin Heavy Industry said the agreement marked the beginning of a long-term industrial collaboration between the two companies, with potential for future cooperation in offshore vessel construction, offshore wind engineering and deep-sea equipment services.
