Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have formalized their plan to create a joint venture, developing a unified software-defined vehicle platform and a dedicated truck operating system. This strategic collaboration, first announced in May, aims to revolutionize commercial vehicles with enhanced digital functionalities. The joint venture will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and will develop technology that allows vehicle manufacturers, including potential future partners, to integrate standalone digital features into their products.

Karin Rådström, CEO of Daimler Truck, emphasizes their shared goal to lead the digital transformation, highlighting the potential for “unprecedented levels of safety, comfort, and efficiency.” Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, echoes this vision, stating that this partnership “redefines software architecture” and aims to simplify complexity, enabling higher connectivity and performance.

The new venture will focus on creating high-performance control units and an operating system designed for commercial vehicles. This framework will allow customers to wirelessly update digital applications, ultimately enhancing efficiency and user experience. Despite the partnership, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck will continue to compete in the market with distinct products and digital solutions.

Subject to regulatory approval, the joint venture is expected to launch in the first half of 2025.
