DP World has recently welcomed the arrival of four automated stacking cranes (ASCs) at London Gateway, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to bolstering the UK’s supply chain infrastructure. This £56 million investment coincides with the celebration of London Gateway’s 10th anniversary, marking a decade of remarkable growth and technological advancements in the UK’s port industry.
The primary role of these ASCs is to efficiently move containers from the port yard onto lorries destined for consumer markets across the nation. They are specifically tailored to service the forthcoming £350 million all-electric fourth berth, which is the world’s first of its kind. When this new berth becomes operational next year, it will substantially increase the logistics hub’s capacity by a remarkable one-third.
London Gateway, which opened its doors in November 2013, has recently achieved the milestone of handling its 11 millionth TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) this year. This significant achievement reaffirms its position as the fastest-growing and most technologically advanced container port in the UK.
Ahsan Agha, Vice President Port Operations at DP World London Gateway, commented on this milestone, saying, “The arrival of the ASCs marks an exciting moment for London Gateway and DP World in the UK, as we continue to develop our unique end-to-end offering, moving goods seamlessly from the factory floor to the customer door. The pressure to manage costs, maintain reliability and improve speed has never been greater.”
A key aspect of this investment is to create an array of assets and capabilities that enable DP World to assist its customers in remaining competitive in demanding markets. Agha emphasized their belief in the UK and their commitment to enhancing growth, supporting businesses, and generating employment opportunities.
The ASCs, supplied by Finnish manufacturer Konecranes, represent a significant advancement in streamlining operations at London Gateway. Specialized software is being developed to seamlessly integrate the new ASCs with the existing crane fleet, ensuring high productivity levels and a seamless experience for customers.
This is just the start of London Gateway’s expansion efforts, with the arrival of an additional 14 cranes expected to service the new fourth berth. Earlier this year, DP World invested £12 million in eight all-electric straddle carriers for London Gateway.
