Osprey has completed what is believed to be the United Kingdom’s first heavy transport operation using a fully electric self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT), demonstrating the potential of zero-emission heavy haulage in demanding port environments.
The UK heavy lift specialist deployed Scheuerle’s battery-powered PowerPack Unit (ePPU) to transport a critical component from an enclosed building to a quayside before transferring it onto a barge using a roll-on/roll-off operation. Every stage of the project was carried out using electric power.

The operation showcased the advantages of battery-electric SPMTs in locations where diesel-powered equipment can be restricted, including enclosed production facilities, shipyards and environmentally sensitive port areas. Operating with zero local emissions and significantly reduced noise levels, the ePPU offers a practical alternative for projects requiring cleaner transport solutions.
With around 200 axle lines, Osprey operates the UK’s largest SPMT fleet. The company says the successful deployment of the electric PowerPack Unit expands its ability to deliver sustainable transport solutions without compromising safety or operational performance.

The Scheuerle ePPU features a 320 kWh battery, offering performance comparable to the manufacturer’s diesel-powered PPU Z390. The system is designed to operate for a full working day, supports DC fast charging of up to 300 kW and is compatible with all generations of Scheuerle SPMTs, enabling straightforward integration into existing fleets.
