Schwandner Deploys MAX810 Trailers for Wind Farm Transport

P. Schwandner Logistik + Transport GmbH is using a fleet of eight MAX810 semi-trailers to transport large concrete tower sections for a wind farm project, with six additional units set to join the fleet.

The operation involves moving concrete half-shells from the production facility to the construction site using a combination of country roads, motorways and narrow forest routes. Each MAX810 can be extended to accommodate the oversized components, while its forced steering system helps the combinations negotiate confined sections of the route.

“When manoeuvring, the forced steering system ensures absolute precision. The remote-controlled steering of the 17.5-inch pendle-axles is extremely practical in every situation,” said Jakob Stuiber, Transport Manager at Schwandner.

Following loading by mobile gantry crane, the components are secured before the transports depart during an overnight window. Vehicles travel in two-unit convoys, with the final section of the journey taking them through forest roads to the wind farm construction site.

According to Schwandner, the MAX810’s steering system also provides stability at motorway exits and other challenging sections, even when the trailers are fully extended.

“This stability, combined with the forced steering system, is exactly what makes the difference in daily operations,” added Stuiber.

Ten hybrid wind turbines are being erected at the site, combining heavy concrete sections in the lower part of the towers with steel components above. Once completed, the turbines will reach heights of around 179 metres.

Schwandner currently operates eight MAX810 units for the transport programme, with six additional trailers planned to strengthen its capacity for future heavy component movements.
