Mammoet has completed a series of complex heavy lift, transport and marine operations for Aibel’s Munin topside, part of Aker BP’s Yggdrasil development in the North Sea.
Contracted by Aibel in late 2023, Mammoet managed critical transport activities across Thailand and Norway. These included moving the Utility Module from Aibel’s fabrication facility in Thailand to the quayside, loading it onto a marine transport vessel for shipment to Haugesund, and subsequently handling the module and sections following their arrival in Norway.
Operations in Haugesund presented additional logistical challenges due to shallow water conditions at the quayside. Mammoet developed a transshipment solution using a smaller barge to transfer the components before load-in and onward transport into Aibel’s assembly hall.
Challenging winter weather and tight positioning tolerances added further complexity during the final installation and mating of the Utility Module with the Munin process module.
In July, the fully assembled topside was weighed to confirm its final weight and centre of gravity before the final load-out operation. Mammoet then moved the complete structure from the Haugesund quayside and loaded it onto the topside transportation barge.
Classified as a Class 1 operation, the load-out had to be completed within a narrow tidal window, requiring detailed engineering, planning and coordination between the project teams.
The successful completion of the operation marks the culmination of Mammoet’s involvement in the Munin topside transport programme, with the structure now prepared for offshore sailaway from Haugesund.
The Munin topside forms part of Aker BP’s Yggdrasil development, with Aibel responsible for its engineering, procurement and construction delivery.
