Hyster Hydrogen ReachStacker Enters Service at Rotterdam Terminal

Rate this post

A hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hyster ReachStacker is entering operation at Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) as part of a five-year project exploring lower-emission solutions for heavy-duty port logistics.

The Hyster RSJ46-33XDH/62 will primarily handle 45 ft containers at the shortsea terminal and is equipped with a dedicated 45 ft spreader.

Power comes from a 60 kW Nuvera fuel cell system supporting a 130 kWh lithium-ion battery, combining hydrogen generation with electric drive technology for intensive container handling operations.

The deployment forms part of a wider innovation programme backed by the Province of South Holland and the EU-supported Just Transition Fund. RST, Berkman Energie Services, Hyster, STC Next and HarbourHUB are working together to create a field laboratory combining the hydrogen ReachStacker with a modular refuelling station.

The project is intended to demonstrate how hydrogen can be integrated into port and industrial logistics independently of the electricity grid, while generating practical data from day-to-day terminal operations.

“Hydrogen fuel cell technology has the potential to play an important role in applications where equipment must combine zero tailpipe emissions with the power and uptime required for intensive container handling,” said Lucien Robroek, President, Global Big Trucks at Hyster.

Local Hyster dealer Heffiq will provide service support throughout the programme, while Hyster specialists will work alongside RST during the trials.

“This hydrogen refuelling station and hydrogen fuel cell-powered ReachStacker allow us to explore the transition in practice,” said Arno Storm, CEO of RST.

The programme will also include training for employees, students and logistics professionals, with a focus on the safe and efficient use of hydrogen and the skills required for the wider energy transition.
