Marsa Maroc has selected a Liebherr LPS 550 portal slewing crane for bulk cargo operations at the Port of Casablanca, marking the first deployment of an LPS crane in Africa.
The rail-mounted crane combines a 48-metre boom with electric drive technology, giving Marsa Maroc the reach, precision and handling capacity required for intensive vessel operations.
Its portal design allows the crane to travel along the quay while preserving valuable working space underneath and around the machine. This helps maintain access routes and cargo flow in a busy terminal environment, while reducing interference with other port activities.
The 48-metre boom also gives the LPS 550 the reach needed to work across a broad range of vessel sizes, while the electric drive supports precise crane movements and consistent performance during demanding handling cycles.
For bulk cargo operations, the new crane provides Marsa Maroc with a dedicated high-capacity solution designed to improve vessel turnaround and berth productivity at one of Morocco’s busiest maritime gateways.
The installation forms part of Marsa Maroc’s wider investment programme as the terminal operator continues to strengthen cargo handling capacity across its network under the Marsa 2030 development strategy.
Casablanca covers more than 450 hectares, with over 8 km of quay and capacity for up to 40 vessels at the same time.
Marsa Maroc manages 35 terminals across 21 ports and handles around 67 million tonnes of cargo annually. In Casablanca alone, the company handled more than 19 million tonnes and almost 1.1 million TEU in 2025.
The LPS 550 follows the delivery of three Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes in 2024 and further expands Marsa Maroc’s handling capabilities.

Additional Liebherr cranes are also scheduled for delivery to Marsa Maroc terminals in Nador and Tangier.
The Casablanca project strengthens Liebherr’s maritime presence in Morocco while adding a new crane type to Marsa Maroc’s growing equipment fleet.
