UK Backs Port Talbot as Floating Wind Hub

Rate this post

The UK Government and Associated British Ports (ABP) have agreed terms to support the development of major floating offshore wind (FLOW) infrastructure at Port Talbot, subject to regulatory approval.

The agreement marks a key step in plans to transform Port Talbot into a strategic hub for floating wind projects in the Celtic Sea, providing large-scale manufacturing, assembly and marshalling capabilities for gigawatt-scale developments.

The development is backed by significant investment, with ABP expected to commit more than £500 million, alongside £64 million in UK Government support. The project is set to drive industrial regeneration and support thousands of skilled jobs across South Wales.

Government ministers, including Jo Stevens and Martin McCluskey, visited the site to underline political backing for the initiative.

The project is central to the UK’s ambition to become a global leader in floating offshore wind, strengthening energy security while boosting coastal economies.

ABP said the investment would position Port Talbot as a cornerstone of the Celtic Sea FLOW sector, supporting projects from the recent leasing round and enabling supply chain growth.

The announcement builds on ABP’s wider offshore wind activity, including recent agreements with RWE and Vestas, reinforcing the port operator’s role in the UK’s energy transition.
