Wiesbauer GmbH & Co. KG, the renowned crane and heavy haulage specialist based in southern Germany, recently put its new Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane to work for the first time using its 80-metre telescopic boom. The crane, delivered last summer with both 50- and 80-metre boom options, was tasked with lifting large prefabricated modules for new classrooms being built on the roof of a children’s clinic in Heilbronn.

The project presented complex logistical challenges due to limited space and a narrow site entrance bordered by a gatehouse and a protected wall. “No other crane in this load capacity class is compact enough to fit through,” explained project manager Christoph Kriegel. To overcome the bottleneck, a smaller crane handled the modules at the entrance, transferring them to a shuttle lorry for delivery to the LTM 1650-8.1.

The long boom was essential, as there was no space to set up a luffing jib. Despite additional planning considerations—such as coordinating with helicopter operations near the hospital’s heliport—the job proceeded smoothly.

Crane operator Ralf Hoffmann, already experienced with the model, described the task as “tricky but successful.” Following the Heilbronn project, Wiesbauer’s team immediately moved on to a bridge lift in Ludwigshafen.
