SSA Marine has successfully completed the full transition of its forklift fleet at Berth 55, Port of Los Angeles, from propane-powered to battery-electric, marking a significant sustainability milestone. The international fruit terminal, where SSA Marine has operated since the 1980s, is now the company’s first to use 100% zero-emissions cargo-handling equipment.

The new electric fleet includes 12 heavy-duty 10,000 lb. and 32 smaller 3,000 lb. Hyster forklifts. This transition is expected to eliminate the use of nearly 44,000 gallons of propane and cut CO2 emissions by approximately 264 metric tons annually.

Achieving this milestone at Berth 55 reinforces SSA Marine’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and innovation,” said Meghan Weinman, VP of sustainability at SSA Marine. This project sets the stage for future green initiatives across our network.”

The initiative is the outcome of a three-year collaboration with the Port of Los Angeles and other stakeholders. Michael DiBernardo, deputy executive director at the port, praised the effort: “SSA Marine has met our 2030 zero-emissions goal for yard equipment five years ahead of schedule.
