Hess GmbH has expanded its crane fleet with the addition of a Liebherr MK 140-5.1E mobile construction crane, further strengthening its capabilities for complex urban lifting projects.

The German crane specialist, which already operates truck mounted cranes, lorry loading cranes and electric cranes for indoor applications, decided to invest in its first mobile construction crane after securing a qualified operator for the machine.

“The MK is our first mobile construction crane. We’d been thinking about it for two years, but we didn’t have the right staff. At the end of last year, we were lucky enough to find the right operator for it, and it was clear to us that now was the time to take the ‘MK’ step,” said Oliver Kuldtzun, Head of the Crane Division at Hess. “As we are very loyal Liebherr customers, it was clear to us that if we were to get a mobile construction crane, it had to be a Liebherr.”

Hess plans to deploy the crane primarily on inner city projects where restricted space and difficult access conditions present challenges for conventional lifting equipment. The company selected the largest model in Liebherr’s MK range due to its performance and long jib reach.

The crane has already demonstrated its capabilities on several projects. During its first assignment in central Düsseldorf, the MK 140-5.1E was positioned between two trees and used to lift a 3.2 tonne chiller unit into the courtyard of the Steigenberger Parkhotel.

It also proved its value during an antenna dismantling project in Krefeld. From a single setup position, the crane was able to reach all required working areas, eliminating the need for repositioning and offering significant advantages over a comparable telescopic crane.

“Thanks to its performance and jib length, the MK 140-5.1E is a highly sought after crane on the market,” added Oliver Kuldtzun.
