France Commissions Fifth Offshore Wind Farm with Innovative Handling Technology

France has launched its fifth offshore wind farm, situated between the Îles d’Yeu and Noirmoutier, which will generate 1,900 GWh annually—enough electricity to power 800,000 homes. The wind farm features 61 turbines, each with an individual capacity of 8MW.

To handle the massive transition pieces (TPs) required for the turbines, Mammoet introduced a new innovation. Traditionally, TPs, which weigh 400 tonnes each, are moved using cranes or Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) fitted with gantries. However, Mammoet developed a system that transforms SPMTs into giant forklifts, allowing for quicker and safer TP transportation. The new TPH800 system can lift up to 800 tonnes, improving efficiency by picking up TPs from underneath instead of using overhead cranes.

Mammoet’s adaptability was crucial in overcoming challenges such as tidal fluctuations at the BOW Terminal in Vlissingen. Their ability to mobilize teams quickly and work around these conditions helped save time and reduce costs, further supporting France’s growing offshore wind energy capabilities.
