Kalmar has signed an agreement with long-term customer DP World Southampton to supply 14 additional hybrid straddle carriers for its container terminal. The order, placed in Q2 2024, is scheduled for delivery by Q2 2025, furthering the port’s commitment to eco-efficient operations.
Located on the UK’s south coast, DP World Southampton is a key hub for global container shipping companies and has been using Kalmar straddle carriers since 2007. This latest order will bring the total number of Kalmar straddle carriers at the terminal to 82.
DP World is focused on reducing its carbon footprint through energy-saving initiatives and investment in sustainable technologies. The hybrid straddle carriers help achieve this by reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to traditional diesel models. They also generate less noise and are powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a biofuel made from 100% renewable materials.
Andrew Bowen, COO of DP World UK, highlighted the long-standing relationship with Kalmar, stating, “These new hybrid straddle carriers will enhance productivity and reduce operational costs at our Southampton hub, supporting our goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable cargo handling.”
Karri Keskinen, Head of Sales at Kalmar, added, “We are proud that hybrid straddle carriers now make up the majority of the fleet at DP World Southampton, marking a significant step towards more sustainable cargo-handling operations.”
