Bolloré Logistics is addressing the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of a 70% reduction in ocean freight CO2e emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 with its new initiative, SEAalternative. This eco-friendly shipping option utilizes biofuel, a key solution in meeting environmental regulations.

Initially available through specific carriers, SEAalternative is now accessible on any trade route and carrier, whether for a single exceptional shipment or through a contractual arrangement. The solution promises an impressive 84% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to traditional shipping, adhering to Smart Freight Center guidelines. The biofuel used is derived from recycled cooking oil, with a commitment to avoiding palm oil.

Ensuring a seamless and verified process, Bolloré Logistics assigns the environmental attributes of the biofuel to the client’s shipment, delivering quarterly declarations. The carbon savings are transparently displayed in the client’s CO2e dashboard and undergo an annual audit by a third party.

SEAalternative aligns with Bolloré Logistics’ CSR Programme, “Powering Sustainable Logistics,” launched in 2018. The company has set ambitious targets, in line with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aiming to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from downstream transportation and distribution by 22% by 2030, based on a 2022 baseline. Odile Maarek, Director of Organization, Methods, and CSR, encourages customers to integrate sustainability into their business activities.
