A 27-machine investment will support railway works across five European countries, combining 120kW engines with independent hydraulic circuits and a compact 2m rear slewing radius.

Swietelsky is expanding its road-rail excavator fleet with 27 Liebherr A 922 Rail machines for deployment in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. The machines were supplied through Liebherr Österreich Vertriebs- und Service GmbH, extending the companies’ long-standing relationship.

The symbolic handover took place at InnoTrans 2026. Liebherr said machine availability, operating costs and local service support were important factors in the contractor’s decision.

Each A 922 Rail is powered by a 120kW engine. Its hydraulic system uses a variable-displacement twin pump delivering 2 × 220 litres/min through independent control circuits, allowing hydraulic attachments to operate independently of the excavator’s working and travel movements. A heavier counterweight improves weight distribution while maintaining a 2,000mm rear slewing radius.

The model is available with different undercarriages, track gauges and rail wheels. A separate variable-displacement pump supplies the rail drive, while brakes integrated into the rail wheels are fitted as standard. Optional four-point stabilisers can increase stability and lifting capacity, particularly when handling loads across the track.

Liebherr and Swietelsky also collaborate on testing and approvals. Swietelsky supported the Austrian approval process for its A 922 Rail machines, with operating experience feeding into further product development. Ground-level access to service points is intended to simplify maintenance and reduce downtime.
