VINCI has secured a major infrastructure contract for the future HS2 high speed rail line in the United Kingdom following the award of a £856 million contract by HS2 Ltd.
The contract has been awarded to Taylor Woodrow, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction, and covers the design, construction, testing and commissioning of key operational infrastructure for the HS2 network in Birmingham.
The project includes the construction of a highly technical rolling stock maintenance depot for HS2 trains together with the Network Integrated Control Centre, which will oversee operations across the entire future HS2 network. The site will feature maintenance facilities, train washing infrastructure, automatic inspection buildings, stabling tracks and a dedicated test track.
Located on a 70 hectare former industrial brownfield site, the development is expected to become a major economic and regeneration hub for Birmingham. Around 500 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, while more than 1,000 long term positions are anticipated once the facility becomes operational.
The wider redevelopment also includes opportunities for future commercial growth and the creation of green spaces on surrounding land released during the project.
HS2 is designed as a low carbon high speed railway linking West London and Birmingham while increasing rail capacity across the UK network. In addition to improving passenger connectivity, the project is expected to free up space on existing railway infrastructure for additional freight and regional transport services.
