Sarens has been selected to deliver heavy transport services for the Train III expansion at the Indorama Eleme fertilizer complex in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, a project set to significantly increase the plant’s production capacity.
The Train III development will add a third production line at the Indorama Eleme Fertilizer and Chemicals complex, boosting annual output from around 2.8 million tonnes to approximately 4.2 million tonnes. The expansion includes new process units capable of producing 2,300 tonnes per day of ammonia and 4,000 tonnes per day of urea, alongside supporting infrastructure such as water treatment, steam systems and cooling facilities.
Sarens is handling the transport of key components weighing between 60 and 200 tonnes through its local joint venture, Sarens Buildwell. The team carried out route surveys and engineering studies in advance to determine the most suitable transport configurations for the oversized cargo.
Based on these assessments, hydraulic modular trailers were selected for the operation, allowing flexible configurations tailored to each load. Equipment was mobilised from the company’s yard to the loading site before modules were transported along carefully planned routes to the final installation area, with particular attention paid to obstacles such as power lines and restricted road conditions.
Located in Rivers State, the Eleme complex is a major petrochemical hub in West Africa producing nitrogen based fertilisers including ammonia and granular urea, a key input for agriculture. The Train III expansion is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fertiliser imports while supporting export potential and local economic growth.
Sarens has operated in Nigeria since 2011 through its partnership with Buildwell, delivering heavy lift and transport solutions across energy, oil and gas and industrial projects.
