Konecranes to Supply Eight Hybrid Straddle Carriers to HHLA Tollerort

HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH has ordered eight hybrid straddle carriers from Konecranes as part of its strategy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the Port of Hamburg. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the units expected to enter service by the end of 2026.

The Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY machines will be used for container transport between quay and yard, stacking operations, and landside truck and rail handling. They will replace older diesel driven models currently carrying out the same duties.

Each unit combines a diesel generator set with an onboard battery system, delivering significantly lower fuel use and emissions compared with conventional diesel drives while maintaining operational performance. A powerlift system also raises the operator comfortably to the cab, supporting improved working conditions.

Ingo Witte, Managing Director of HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort, said the investment aligns with the terminal’s long term development plans. He highlighted the terminal’s experience with Konecranes Noell straddle carriers and said the hybrid solution supports carbon reduction targets while preserving productivity.

The carriers are based on Konecranes’ latest modular design platform, allowing relatively simple upgrades to fully electric or hydrogen power in the future. Peter Kania, Sales Director Port Solutions at Konecranes, said the concept provides flexibility as operational and emissions strategies evolve.

HHLA operates Konecranes equipment across several Hamburg terminals, and the order further strengthens the partnership.
