A Potain MDT 389 L16 tower crane is now hard at work on the ambitious New Gaslini Hospital development in Genoa, Italy, a project that aims to redefine pediatric healthcare and research on a global scale.

Set for completion in 2030, the new medical hub will consolidate services into a state-of-the-art complex dedicated to rare conditions affecting children, adolescents, and expectant mothers. The build includes eleven floors for diagnostics and intensive care, four for inpatient treatment, and upgrades to existing pavilions to boost capacity and patient care.

Long-time Potain partner CMB, collaborating with the crane manufacturer for more than 50 years, is leading the construction. “The initial phase involved demolishing two existing pavilions to make way for Padiglione Zero, which will house much of the hospital’s core activities,” says Andrea Montorio, Technical Director at CMB. “We will then develop the new Technological Hub before restoring the original hospital structure, including crucial seismic improvements.”

Installed with a 63 m hook height and a 65 m jib, the MDT 389 L16 delivers a maximum lifting capacity of 16 t. Its installation required precise coordination due to limited available space. “With 80% of the site occupied, only 20% is usable for crane operations and logistics,” notes Sabino Riefoli, Potain Key Account Manager.

The crane joins an existing Potain MD 125, with an MDT 178 to follow as construction advances.
