Swiss propulsion specialist WinGD has launched its first high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engine, the X-DF-HP, designed specifically for ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs). The new technology was introduced at Marintec China 2025 and comes at a time when shipowners are accelerating LNG investments amid uncertainty surrounding future global emissions regulation.

The X-DF-HP engine will be available in X82 and X92 bore sizes, addressing the high power and efficiency demands of the world’s largest container ships. First deliveries are expected in 2028. WinGD anticipates significant efficiency gains compared to similar dual-fuel solutions, based on insights from its proven diesel engine platforms.

ULCVs require immense propulsion power and long-term fuel flexibility,” said Benny Hilström, Vice President of Market Development at WinGD. “With X-DF-HP, operators gain a purpose-built, reliable solution tailored to the most demanding trade routes.”

The new engine aligns with existing auxiliary system requirements, allowing straightforward installation at shipyards. It meets IMO Tier III emissions limits in both gas and diesel modes using only standard SCR technology, offering a compact, compliance-ready package for vessel operators.

Built on the established high-pressure Diesel X92-B platform, the engine delivers a step forward in fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas performance, according to WinGD Vice President of R&D, Sebastian Hensel.

The X-DF-HP extends WinGD’s multi-fuel portfolio, complementing its methanol/ethanol-capable and ammonia-ready designs. Fully compatible with renewable methane blends, the new engine provides a practical pathway to lower-carbon operations while preserving future fuel flexibility.

“For ULCVs selecting LNG for their decarbonisation strategy, X-DF-HP offers the most cost-effective choice,” Hilström added.
