Van Oord has secured a contract from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to install inter-array cables for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. Located approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Taichung in central Taiwan, the 500-megawatt (MW) wind farm will provide a reliable source of green electricity to power Taiwanese businesses once operational.
Under the contract, Van Oord will oversee the transport, installation, and burial of 33 inter-array cables, totaling approximately 64 kilometers in length. The company will deploy its specialized cable-laying vessel Nexus and utilize a remote-controlled trencher to ensure the cables are securely buried to the required seabed depth. Installation activities are scheduled to commence in 2027.
This project reinforces Van Oord’s established presence in Taiwan, where the company has already played a crucial role in installing inter-array and export cables for the Greater Changhua offshore wind farms. Taiwan’s government has set ambitious offshore wind energy targets, aiming for 5.7 gigawatts (GW) of capacity by 2025 and an additional 15 GW by 2035.
Bart van Schooten, Area Manager at Van Oord, expressed enthusiasm for the project:
“We are excited to extend our strong track record in Taiwan with our involvement in the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm. Leveraging our expertise in cable-laying and operational excellence, we are committed to supporting Taiwan’s energy transition and contributing to the country’s offshore wind ambitions. We look forward to building on our success with more projects in the region.”
