Mammoet Powers Life-Extension Project at Bruce Power Nuclear Plant

Rate this post

Mammoet is playing a pivotal role in extending the lifespan of Bruce Power, one of the world’s largest nuclear power plants located in Ontario, Canada. Through its expertise and advanced equipment, Mammoet is contributing to the plant’s Major Component Replacement (MCR) projects, part of a larger Life-Extension initiative that will ensure clean energy production at the site through 2064.

The MCR projects, launched in 2020, involve replacing key components across six reactor units (Units 3-8) within Bruce A and Bruce B stations. Together, these stations power over 30% of Ontario’s energy needs while producing life-saving medical isotopes. The larger Life-Extension program, which began in 2016, is Ontario’s most significant private-sector clean energy initiative, aligning with Canada’s climate goals by securing reliable and sustainable energy for decades to come.

As part of the Steam Generator Replacement Team (SGRT) — which includes Aecon, United Engineers & Constructors, and Framatome — Mammoet is overseeing the removal and installation of vital equipment. This includes 90-tonne steam generators and the temporary storage of 300-tonne steam drums. At the heart of these operations is Mammoet’s PTC-35 ring crane, renowned as one of the world’s most powerful land-based cranes. In addition, Mammoet’s specialized equipment is being utilized for the movement and replacement of heat exchangers, transformers, and electrical components on-site.

Following the completion of Unit 6 refurbishment at Bruce B, work is underway on Unit 3 at Bruce A, with Unit 4 set to begin in February 2025. The remaining reactor units will follow sequentially.

Kyle Hannah, Account Manager at Mammoet, shared his enthusiasm for the project:
“We are proud to contribute to Bruce Power’s refurbishment and to strengthen a partnership that has thrived since the early 1990s. Our expertise and advanced equipment ensure that one of the world’s largest nuclear extension programs progresses safely and efficiently.”

Rob Hoare, Vice President of MCR Execution at Bruce Power, added:
“Mammoet’s deep understanding of our operations, combined with their commitment to safety and precision, makes them an invaluable partner in this crucial initiative.”
