Royal Boskalis B.V. has announced plans to invest in a new high-capacity cable lay vessel to support growing demand in the offshore wind and interconnector markets.
The new vessel will strengthen Boskalis’ position in the offshore energy sector and support the global transition towards renewable energy infrastructure. Designed for the installation of high-voltage direct current cables, the cable lay vessel is expected to enter service in 2029.
According to Boskalis, increasing electrification, decarbonisation targets and energy security requirements are driving demand for stronger international grid connections and offshore wind transmission systems. The new vessel will focus on long-distance cable installation projects linked to these developments.
The cable lay vessel will feature two 12,000-tonne cable carousels, including a concentric carousel, allowing the installation of longer continuous cable sections. This design reduces the need for offshore cable joints, helping improve efficiency and long-term cable reliability.
Royal Boskalis B.V. has more than 15 years of experience in subsea cable installation and has participated in over 140 cable-related offshore projects worldwide. The company currently operates three cable lay vessels, a trenching support vessel and a range of specialised trenching equipment.
Boskalis said its integrated capabilities across survey, dredging, seabed preparation, cable laying and rock installation allow the company to deliver complete offshore solutions while reducing operational interface risks.
