Palfinger Marine to Equip RWE’s Nordseecluster Offshore Substations

Palfinger Marine has been selected to equip two offshore substations in RWE’s Nordseecluster project with advanced lifting solutions and lifesaving appliances. Known for its wide product portfolio in the offshore sector, Palfinger Marine will supply crucial equipment for one of Germany’s largest offshore wind projects.

Having already provided lifting solutions for Germany’s first offshore wind park, alpha ventus, back in 2009, Palfinger Marine has continued to enhance its platform cranes to meet the demanding conditions of offshore environments. These advanced cranes will now be used in the Nordseecluster project, located in the harsh waters of the North Sea, 50 kilometers off the island of Juist.

Developed by RWE, a leading global energy company, the Nordseecluster will consist of two phases. Cluster A is expected to become fully operational by 2027, while Cluster B will follow in 2029. Together, the two clusters will have a combined capacity of up to 1.6 GW, generating enough green electricity to power around 1.6 million German households.

Palfinger Marine’s involvement highlights the company’s long-standing relationships with key industry players. “It is very exciting to implement a project with our long-standing partners, RWE and the renowned shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique,” said Iavor Markov, Global Sales Manager Wind Cranes at Palfinger Marine This is the second project where we have been chosen to provide equipment for substations built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique.”

For the Nordseecluster, Palfinger Marine will supply three fixed boom cranes—two PF200 models with a seven-meter outreach and one PF160 model with a 4.5-meter outreach—along with four liferaft davits. The equipment delivery is scheduled to begin in October 2024.

Palfinger Marine’s expertise in the offshore wind sector has evolved alongside the industry’s stringent demands. “Thanks to our extensive experience, we are ideally positioned to offer innovative and durable equipment, as well as efficient project handling from a single source,” added Markov.
