FPT Industrial, a contributor to the ambitious Fehmarnbelt tunnel project, is actively engaged in the construction of the world’s longest immersed tunnel, stretching 11 miles between Denmark and Germany. This tunnel, slated to be the fastest route connecting Scandinavia to Central Europe, is expected to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance capacity on roads and railways.

Partnering with distributor Bimotor, FPT Industrial, a brand under the Iveco Group specializing in low-environmental impact powertrains, has provided its F36 Stage V engines for power generation to CGM, a leading producer of gensets. The CGM gensets, powered by FPT Industrial engines, are currently operational at the expansive construction site, which includes the world’s largest concrete factory.

Scheduled for completion by 2029 and co-financed by the European Commission, the Fehmarnbelt tunnel comprises 79 standard and 10 special elements. Each standard element, measuring 217 meters in length and weighing 73,500 tonnes, accommodates two tubes for motorway, two for railway, and a service passage. The intricate construction process involves fitting waterproof bulkheads to elements before towing them into place using tugs. The elements are then lowered into a 12-meter-deep trench dredged on the seabed and carefully coupled together, demanding a reliable and always-ready energy source.

The F36 engine, designed for CGM’s gensets, meets Stage V / Tier 4F emissions requirements and boasts high performance (up to 100 kVA PRP at 50 Hz) and efficiency. With an integrated solution, including a cooling pack specifically developed for harsh conditions, pre-installed air cleaner, and a preassembled and pre-validated ATS, the engine ensures fast and simple installation. Notable features such as a best-in-class service interval (600 h), one-side serviceability, hydraulic tappets, and lifetime ATS contribute to minimum maintenance costs and maximum uptime.

Guglielmo Tummarello, Head of EMEA dealer sales at FPT Industrial, expresses pride in being part of this transformative project: “The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will enable traffic to use the shortest and fastest route, thus reducing CO2 emissions and freeing up capacity on roads and railways. We at FPT Industrial are happy and proud to have been chosen to participate in this huge project that will benefit the whole European transport network, and which is perfectly in keeping with our commitment towards sustainability.”
