DP World, a leading end-to-end supply chain solutions provider, has completed the third phase of its €200 million investment plan at the Antwerp Gateway Terminal. The latest addition includes a new stacking crane module aimed at providing faster and greener solutions for customers.

As part of a six-year modernization, decarbonization, and expansion initiative, DP World commissioned three quay cranes, six automatic stacking cranes, and nine hybrid straddle carriers in Antwerp this year. By 2026, the terminal is expected to stack nearly 1 million additional containers using 100% green energy and emission-reducing technology.

The €200 million green investment plan, supported by the European Union, will continue under the leadership of incoming CEO Nawaf Abdulla. Two final ZPMC cranes from Changxing, China, are set to arrive in summer 2024, bringing the total number of quay cranes at the Deurganckdock to 15. Additionally, 24 automatic stacking cranes, including eight to be constructed next year, will further enhance capacity.

DP World’s investments focus on sustainability, with the Antwerp Gateway Terminal utilizing 85% locally generated electricity, making it the greenest terminal in the port of Antwerp. The adoption of automatic stacking cranes contributes to increased capacity and efficiency while operating on 100% electricity.

These advancements align with DP World’s goal of becoming net zero by 2050, with the electrification and decarbonization of operations in Antwerp leading to a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per container movement over eight years.

Incoming CEO Nawaf Abdulla expressed DP World’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies and equipment to strengthen Antwerp Gateway’s competitive position. The investments ensure the terminal is ready for the future, providing additional capacity and sustainable services for customers.

The leadership transition will see Nawaf Abdulla taking on the role of CEO at DP World Antwerp upon the retirement of Dirk Van den Bosch. Abdulla, with a background in various international positions within the group, aims to further expand the services of the terminal in the coming years.
