Impala Terminals Group has acquired the HES Hartel Tank Terminal through an auction process. As a global infrastructure and logistics company, Impala will invest between 90 and 100 million euros over the next two years to finalize the terminal’s construction. The transaction is set to conclude shortly.

Renamed ‘Impala Energy Infrastructure Netherlands,’ the terminal offers 1.3 million cubic meters of storage for bulk liquid energy products and is expected to generate up to 70 full-time local jobs. With over 50 tanks, berths for VLCC-size vessels, and nine barge jetties, the terminal boasts high-grade specifications and connectivity, facilitating flexibility for users. Importantly, it can store various biofuel products, supporting the region’s energy transition.

The construction of the terminal was paused in December 2022 due to setbacks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and additional costs. Following the insolvency of project owner HES Hartel Tank Terminal B.V. in January, Impala emerged as the successful bidder in the auction process. Carl Hamm, curator for the auction process, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing Impala’s commitment to completing the asset in the Port of Rotterdam.

Sjoerd Bazen, CEO of Impala Energy Infrastructure, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition, positioning Impala in the major trading hub of Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp. The Port of Rotterdam Authority’s interim CEO and COO, Boudewijn Siemons, congratulated Impala on securing the terminal, recognizing it as a significant addition for storing bulk liquid energy products and providing a new future for the facility after a challenging period of bankruptcy.
