The Angolan government has recently chosen AGL (Africa Global Logistics) as the successful bidder for the Lobito container and conventional terminals, following a competitive international tender process initiated in January 2023. AGL, renowned as Africa’s foremost operator of port concessions, brings its wealth of experience and expertise to Lobito, offering strategic, financial, and technical excellence.

Backed by MSC, AGL’s ambitious industrial project is poised to significantly improve the connectivity of the Lobito port platform. This enhancement is expected to invigorate regional trade and provide essential support for ongoing industrialization efforts. Additionally, the Port of Lobito, as Angola’s second-largest port, holds a key position in the global energy transition, serving as the primary Atlantic gateway to the Copperbelt region. This port infrastructure will play a vital role in the transport of critical minerals such as copper and cobalt to international markets.

To achieve these objectives, the Port of Lobito will be seamlessly connected to the existing 1,300 km Benguela railway network, along with the forthcoming railway line to Zambia. These developments are poised to significantly reduce transit times for goods heading to Europe and the Americas.

Philippe Labonne, President of Africa Global Logistics, expressed appreciation for the Angolan government’s trust in AGL’s vision for the Port of Lobito. He emphasized AGL’s unwavering commitment to supporting Africa’s transformation and collaborating with stakeholders to address the continent’s challenges. The dedication of AGL’s teams is centered on this ambitious mission, marking their 22nd port concession.

Through a substantial €100 million investment plan, AGL is committed to enhancing the terminal’s attractiveness and making a substantial contribution to the economic and social development of the region. AGL’s comprehensive portfolio of maritime, port, and logistics solutions will empower the Lobito port platform to serve as a powerful catalyst for growth in Angola and the surrounding area.

This new concession, scheduled to take effect in the first quarter of 2024, will see AGL take over the staff of the Empresa Portuária do Lobito EP port authority. AGL has outlined an extensive training program for the staff and local subcontractors to ensure that the Port of Lobito delivers services that adhere to international standards.
