Bertling coordinated the transport of 73 power station components from China and Belgium to a power generation project in Carrington, near Manchester, combining breakbulk shipping, coaster transport and heavy road haulage.
The cargo totalled 682.7 tonnes and 1,251.44 cbm, including generators, transformers, flywheels and other power generation equipment. Shipments originated in Shanghai and Antwerp before continuing through Esprit in Greater Manchester and Mostyn Port in the UK.
Following the initial ocean transport, the heaviest and oversized components were transferred to a coaster vessel for the next stage of the journey, while the remaining cargo was discharged separately before onward delivery to site.
The largest individual unit weighed 221.54 tonnes and measured 10.74 x 4.98 x 4.18 metres.
Bertling’s chartering, operations and technical and engineering teams coordinated the different transport stages, including vessel stevedoring, crane hire, permits, police escorts and the deployment of multi-axle modular trailers for the heavy road movements.
Timing presented an additional challenge, with the deliveries required to reach the project before a scheduled canal closure for lock maintenance.
The combination of marine and road transport required close coordination across several locations to keep the oversized equipment moving within the available delivery window.
The project adds another multimodal heavy transport operation to Bertling’s power generation portfolio, linking international breakbulk shipping with specialist inland logistics for the final delivery into Greater Manchester.
