A Liebherr LS-C 60 cylinder-luffing ship crane will equip the new multipurpose vessel Mareva Nui II, combining cargo and passenger transport across the remote Tuamotu archipelago in French Polynesia.
The crane offers a lifting capacity of up to 40 tonnes and has been selected for its compact footprint, low centre of gravity and ability to handle mixed cargo within the vessel’s restricted deck layout.
A minimum working radius of three metres allows the LS-C 60 to serve available storage areas efficiently, while its cylinder-luffing design reduces the number of wire ropes and sheaves required, helping to simplify maintenance during long-term operation.
The Mareva Nui II is being developed for TMTO, a regional maritime operator and wholly owned subsidiary of SNP. The vessel will provide essential cargo and passenger connections between communities spread across the Tuamotu islands.
Built by Handelskade at Hong Ha Shipyard in Vietnam, the purpose-designed vessel incorporates tween decks, folding hatch covers and passenger accommodation, requiring cargo-handling equipment that can operate without compromising stability or usable deck space.
“This vessel is a vital link for TMTO’s operations, enabling them to serve communities across the Tuamotu islands with greater efficiency and reliability. The crane enables TMTO to manage different types of cargo in a consistent and dependable way,” said Menno van der Plas, Director of Handelskade.
Handelskade is delivering the vessel as a turnkey project, covering engineering, construction, sourcing and commissioning.
“This project underlines the importance of selecting equipment that aligns with both vessel design and operating conditions. The LS-C 60 provides a well-balanced solution for this type of vessel concept,” said Christian Voigtländer, Sales Manager at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH.
