The Munich Fire Service has introduced two new Liebherr LTM 1070-4.2 cranes, enhancing its capabilities for technical rescue operations across the city.

The 70-tonne mobile cranes replace older units from 1991 and 1998, improving reliability and operational performance in demanding emergency scenarios. Positioned in the north-west and south-east of Munich, the cranes ensure a response time of under 30 minutes and can also be deployed together for tandem lifts when required.

With two identical cranes, we gain not only redundancy but also tactical flexibility,” said Dominik Franz, fire officer at the Munich Fire Service.

Selected following a Europe-wide tender, the four-axle Liebherr cranes met key requirements including high lifting capacity with onboard ballast, strong manoeuvrability and flexible outrigger configurations—essential for operations in dense urban environments.

Additional features include a rear recovery winch, intercom system for operator communication and compatibility with snow chains, enabling safe operation in a wide range of conditions.

Fire brigade cranes in Munich are deployed in complex rescue situations, such as major road and rail accidents, overturned construction equipment, storm damage and high-angle rescues. They can also support neighbouring regions when needed.

Before entering service, around 50 operators completed extensive training in cooperation with Liebherr, including instruction at its Ehingen facility and practical exercises.

“The collaboration with Liebherr was very professional,” added Franz. “The cranes provide optimal support for our daily work.”
