deugro Delivers 110 km of Subsea Cable to Saudi Arabia

deugro coordinated the transport of nearly 110 kilometres of 132 kV CTS submarine cables from China to the Port of Jazan, Saudi Arabia, for the Farasan–Madayah Submarine Cable Project.

Led by deugro China as the project’s control tower, the operation brought together teams from deugro Saudi Arabia, deugro Chartering and dteq Transport Engineering Solutions. The cables and their carousel represented a combined weight of more than 5,380 tonnes, with the carousel measuring 25 x 25 x 9.6 metres.

With limited suitable tonnage available, deugro Chartering identified and secured a deck carrier capable of accommodating the cargo and meeting the project’s schedule. dteq engineers then developed and reviewed the technical arrangements required for the carousel installation, load distribution and sea fastening.

Engineering assessments identified challenges resulting from the highly concentrated cable weight on the vessel’s deck. The solution included revised longitudinal strength calculations and strategically positioned steel shims to transfer loads to the deck’s primary structural members. Additional modifications were made to the carousel restraints and lashing arrangements to ensure safe transportation.

Following a 15-day carousel installation involving a 30-person team, the vessel moved to the supplier’s terminal in Changshu, where the submarine cables were spooled directly onto the carousel. The operation ran around the clock for ten days under the supervision of deugro and dteq teams.

Once loading and securing were completed, the deck carrier departed China for Saudi Arabia as scheduled.

“The safe and timely delivery of this critical subsea cable project is another example of deugro’s ability to deliver complex cable logistics solutions,” said Erwin Visser, Manager, Subsea Cable Logistics at deugro.

The cables subsequently arrived at the Port of Jazan on schedule, allowing the project’s cable-laying activities to proceed as planned.
