Liebherr Fibre Technology Gains Ground in Tower Crane Market

Liebherr’s Fibre technology is gaining momentum in the tower crane sector, moving beyond its innovation phase to become an increasingly established solution worldwide.

Since its market launch in 2019, more than 400 Fibre cranes have been deployed globally, now representing around 40% of sales. The technology combines high-performance fibre rope with optimised crane systems, offering improved handling, higher load capacities, and reduced maintenance requirements.

A key advantage is enhanced repairability. Liebherr reports that on-site repair rates have increased to 80%, rising to as much as 90% when combined with rope shortening. This significantly reduces downtime and limits the need for costly rope replacements, a common issue with traditional steel ropes. The fibre rope also delivers a failure rate of below 2%, contributing to high levels of operational reliability.

In addition, Liebherr has extended the total service life of its fibre ropes to 14 years, covering both operating and storage periods. The option to convert cranes between fibre and steel rope further enhances flexibility and investment security for customers.

Fibre cranes are now in operation across a wide range of projects, from urban construction in Europe to industrial and maritime applications in regions such as Brazil and Curaçao. Increasing customer demand and fleet conversion plans from major rental companies suggest that Fibre technology is steadily establishing itself as a new standard in the global tower crane market.
